City police on Wednesday slapped stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against notorious goon Roshan Sheikh and his gang members. The gang was booked on May 9 for allegedly kidnapping a man and his son and demanding Rs 20 lakh as extortion. Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay on Wednesday invoked MCOCA against the gang on the basis of proposal made by PI Anil Taksande under the guidance of DCP Detection Gajanan Rajmane.

According to police, Sheikh and his gang members, including Ankit Pali and others, were threatening complainant Gaurav Dilip Dani (38), a resident of G-4, Shiv Gaurav Estate for extortion of Rs 20 lakh. Sheikh is the mastermind. Dani had given an advertisement in the newspaper for renting out his commercial shop situated in Sadar area. Since then, Sheikh came in contact with him. Sheikh was eyeing properties of Dani. The accused had kidnapped Dani and his son on May 2, 2019 and bundled them in a car. Threatening Dani for his life, the accused demanded Rs 20 lakh as extortion. Fearing for life, Dani had promised him of paying the amount. Soon after, the accused had collected around Rs five lakh from the victim in a year. A case under Sections 363, 364 (a), 384, 386, 387, 397, 504, 506 of Indian Penal Code was registered against Sheikh and his gang members.

Sheikh amassed Rs 1.50 cr by targeting women DCP Gajanan Rajmane said that Roshan Sheikh used to target married women through social media. After getting their phone numbers, he invited them for a party. In many cases, the investigators found that Sheikh had offered drinks laced with sedative to the women and take their ‘obscene’ pictures. Using the pictures, Sheikh was demanding money from the women as extortion. During checking of his house, police recovered Fixed Deposit (FD) receipts worth Rs 1.50 crore. Over 15 women was targeted by Sheikh. Two offences were registered against him at Nagpur and one at Mumbai, DCP Rajmane said.
