These days everybody talks with fear about the COVID-19 positive cases and related matter. But there is a positive side also that should take front seat amidst all the statistics which probably very few would have thought. Can anybody imagine, in Nagpur district alone Government is almost ready with about 40,000 beds against 264 present active cases. How huge the preparation is? This is what compelled Rajesh Tope, Public Health Minister to pat on the back of Divisional Commissioner Dr Sanjeev Kumar, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’. Tope, said, “This is very much positive side and I am planning to spread it Statewide. Such stories will surely help us in convincing people not to get panic. Nagpur division has done a fantastic job and I must appreciate Division head for the same.” Dr Sanjeev Kumar who was once Commissioner of Health Services in Maharashtra is himself a doctor of medicine.

He did prepare entire plan with a thought. The hospitals in the region are developed in three categories. In Nagpur city there are 3,633 beds in category one, 2,337 in category two while 18,388 are in category three. For example, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has developed 225 beds in its trauma centre. It has almost developed 600 beds separately with High Dependency Unit and Intensive Care Unit. Similarly, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital too created 600 beds in its surgical complex. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) too has almost developed its facilities. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in a short span came up with 50 beds specially meant for treating coronavirus patients. In rural areas too the beds have been kept ready to accommodate coronavirus patients. If one has a look at the statistics of preparedness of Nagpur division then one would find 7,353 beds each in Category one and two while 29,203 beds are in category 3.

This shows there is a huge gap between number of active cases and the total beds. Positive cases are rising but recovery too is fast, because the administration has gone ahead as far as preparedness is concerned. In Nagpur district, barring a few coronavirus positive patients, nobody is kept in ICU. They are kept in isolation, and after ten days get recovered. Administration with a vision kept developing hospitals brick by brick that will pay dividends.
