Gurlalsinghji Tuli, the founder of Tuli Empire of Central India, passed away on Friday (June 5, 2020) at the age of 85 years. He is survived by five children, 13 grandchildren, four brothers, and a host of relatives. The city of Nagpur and Central India is witness to the success story of Tuli Group’s business in various fields. Gurlalsinghji’s father Kapoorsingh Tuli hailed from Sheikhupura in Pakistan, and came to India after partition and started from scratch the business of agriculture at Karnal, and transport at Delhi. Gurlalsinghji shifted to Nagpur in the year 1957 and started a small transportation business with a single truck. Then, he decided to shift his family -- four brothers Inderjeet Singh Tuli, Mohabbat Singh Tuli, Daleep Singh Tuli, and Bachitter Singh Tuli (Kukku) -- to Nagpur.
All five brothers together worked very hard and within a few years Bombay Goods Transport Garage became the largest transporter of Central India with a self-owned fleet of more than 500 trucks. From 1974, the Group ventured into hospitality industry with their first hotel in Nagpur named ‘Skylark’. The Group is today the biggest hoteliers having developed a range of 3-Star Hotels viz Tuli International in 1994, Tuli Tiger Resort at Kanha (MP) in 1998, Tuli Tiger Corridor at Pench (MP) in 2008, and Tuli Imperial (2010). Gurlalsinghji entered the field of entertainment and in 1986 started Jaswant Cinema, which is now converted into Jaswant Multiplex.
To pay homage to his father Kapoorsinghji Tuli, the Group entered the field of education and started Tuli College of Hotel Management and Tuli Public School. Gurlalsinghji Tuli was a father figure for his huge family. He was a socially revered personality, who was well known for resolving disputes amongst other family groups as an arbitrator, as people had great faith in his sense of justice.
