A POOR vegetable vendor’s 11-year-old son committed suicide after the boy’s mother allegedly reprimanded him for taking money from home and buying a ‘samosa’ without seeking her permission. Around 8.30 pm on Sunday, Veeru Natthu Sahu was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a saree in the kitchen of his house at Ganga Nagar in Gittikhadan area. Preliminary investigation revealed that Veeru’s father Natthu Jamunaprasad Sahu (36) had a small business in the city.

Due to lockdown, the family was badly hit financially and Natthu started selling vegetables to make ends meet. On Sunday evening, Natthu’s youngest son Veeru (11), who is a Standard VII student, wanted to eat ‘samosas’. He took Rs 10 from the house without informing his mother and brought a ‘samosa’ from a nearby sweetmeat shop. He kept the ‘samosa’ wrapped in a paper on a table and went inside. His brother, who is elder to him by three years, saw the ‘samosa’ and ate it. When Veeru came to know about it he got angry. He complained to his mother about his elder brother.

After his mother came to know that Veeru had taken money from the house without her permission, she allegedly scolded him for his behaviour. As Veeru started crying, his mother asked him to get another samosa for himself. Instead of bringing the second Samosa, Veeru went inside the kitchen and took the extreme step. Gittikhadan Police are conducting further investigations after registering a case under Section 174 of Code of Criminal Procedure.
