Nagpur Traffic police have imposed fine on 6,92,871 vehicle users for violation of traffic rules from January 1 to June 20 this year. Of them, 1,74,912 were slapped with fine for not wearing helmets showing lethargic approach among the citizens about their own safety. Fine collectivelly worth Rs 17.70 crore was imposed against these rule violators by the police.
The information came to fore in an RTI query filed by RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar. According to statistics, fine collectivelly worth Rs Rs 73.94 lakh was slapped against 49,034 motorists for signal jumping while 33,619 charged with fine worth Rs 57.09 lakh for using mobile phone while driving
vehicle. Massive 43,666 four-wheeler drivers were booked for not wearing seat belts and fine of Rs 50.96 lakh was imposed on them, followed by 31,885 vehicle users with fine of Rs 51.94 lakh for triple-seat bike riding, 25,696 for drunk driving with fine of Rs 5.41 crore and 159 booked with fine of Rs 1.47 lakh for using vehicle without having registration number on number plate.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic Vikram Sali said that maximum two-wheeler riders were seen wearing helmets. “We are planning more special drives next months to sensitize people about wearing helmet,” he said. The bike riders should wear protective headgear for their own safety and this will be the only motto behind the enforcement drive. If people voluntarily wore protective headgear then traffic police would not have to even undertake the drive, DCP Sali said.
On Nagpur’s roads, close to 15 lakh two wheelers are plying and most of them started wearing helmet after police action.
