The water level of Totladoh and Kamptee Khairy reservoirs on Pench river, from which the city draws its supply, has crossed the 90 per cent mark on Tuesday. Ongoing heavy rains in the region increased the water level in both dams and the administration has started opening its gates. Totladoh dam which is the lifeline of Nagpur city on Tuesday recorded 90.81 per cent water level while Kamptee Khairy is on 96.10 per cent mark. The incessant rains that going on in Madhya Pradesh from last few days has increased the chances of releasing water from Chaurai dam. If it happens then the administration will open more gates of Totladoh and Kamptee Khairy both for the safety of the dams.

The administration has already opened six gates to 0.3 metre and released 190.1 Cumec from Totladoh dam while two gates of Kamptee Khairy were also opened on Monday. In 2019, MP Government released water from Chaurai dam which raised the water level of Totladoh and Kamptee Khairy and again both reservoirs are handling the same situation.

With forecast of heavy rains in Chhindwara district in the coming week and with at least another month of monsoon, water level in Pench reservoirs is certain to go up even further. Live storage in Chaurai dam, which has a capacity of 421.2 million meter cube (MMC), has increased drastically in last few days due to heavy rainfall in Chhindwara district. However, the live storage in Totladoh dam, which has a capacity of 1166.93 Mcum, increased to 1073.46 Mcum on August 11. Similarly, Kamptee Khairy whose capacity is 180.98 Mcum, have 175.45 Mcum water stock on Tuesday.

Increasing water level in all these dams also raised the flood like situation nearby villages and the administration has already issued alert to the villagers. Last year at this time it was just 1.2 per cent of water storage in Totladoh dam and Kamptee Khairy had live storage of 25.85 per cent only. Both reservoirs of Nagpur district getting water from Chaurai dam from last two years.

MP Government constructed Chaurai dam to their own use. But, heavy rainfall in MP from last two years during monsoon crossing the water storage limit of Chaurai dam. Hence, the MP Government releasing water from their dam and the excess water helping to raise water level in Totladoh and Kamptee Khairy in our side.
