THE flowers are witnessing good demand during the ongoing festive season which has lifted the prices in the Netaji Wholesale Market situated at Sitabuldi. Apart from this, the local supply of flowers from nearby areas of Nagpur has seen a significant drop that has also contributed to the rise in prices. “Although the Ganesh Chaturthi festival is being celebrated in a restricted manner as the COVID-19 pandemic is in full bloom, the prices of flowers like marigold (Zendu) which are generally used during pooja has increased remarkably,” said Jaywant Rannaware, President of Mahatma Fule Pushpa Utpadak Sangh on Monday. Everyday ,in the morning till the afternoon the Netaji Flower Market is in full activity with large number of people visiting the Netaji wholesale market to buy flowers.
In retail, the flowers and garlands are being sold at exorbitant prices, he added. He said that the Marigold (Zendu) is being quoted at Rs 250 per kg to Rs 300 per kg, Marigold small at Rs 200 per kg to Rs 250 per kg, Desi Rose at Rs 400 per kg, Divine (Shirdi) Rose at Rs 500 per kg, Dutch Rose at Rs 200 per bundle (20 pieces), Gerbera at Rs 50 bundle (10 pieces), Carnation at Rs 200 per bundle (20 pieces), Orchid at Rs 300 per bundle to Rs 400 per bundle (20 pieces),Chrysanthemums at Rs 200 per bundle (10 pieces) and Lillium at Rs 400 per bundle (10 pieces) at the wholesale market.
Local farmers have suffered huge losses due to heavy rains which had damaged and spoiled a large portion of the flower production. The quality of flowers this season has been hit due to incessant rains, he further added. To meet the heavy demand, traders are sourcing flowers from far off places like Washim, Marathwada, Akola and Nashik. Flowers are also flown in from Bangaluru, Mumbai and Pune, another flower trader at the Netaji The situation will continue for the coming months, traders said.
