Search for the body of Nayan Yedkar (20), a resident of Babulkheda, was on till late evening. As per information, 82-year-old Lahanubai Sadashiv Sarode, a resident of Babulkheda, passed away. Her grandson Sumit Bandu Sarode, his friends Aakash, Harshit and Nayan, family members and relatives came for immersing her ashes in Kolar river. Around 3 pm, Aakash, Harshit, Nayan and Sumit went into the water to immerse the ashes. Suddenly, Aakash slipped and drowned.

Harish tried to rescue him but he also started drowning. Noticing his cries, Nayan also jumped into the water to save him but he, too, was washed away. Others who were at the spot stood helplessly as none of them knew how to swim. After receiving information about the tragedy, staff from Khaperkheda Police Station led by Inspector Jaipal Singh Girase rushed to Kolar ghat. Taking help of local fishermen, cops made futile efforts to trace the bodies. Finally, a team of Fire & Emergency services of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and SDRF was summoned. SDRF personnel traced the bodies of Aakash and Harshit and fished them out. Police then sent the bodies for autopsy.

The search operation, which was suspended in late evening, would resume on Sunday morning to trace Nayan’s body. Prima face, a senior officer of Nagpur (Rural) Police said, the youths who drowned were unaware of the depth of the water in the river resulting in the tragedy. “Khaperkheda Police registered a case of accidental deaths and started investigation,” he added.
