BRINGING some respite from mixed feelings of anxiety and depression due to ongoing Covid-19 spike across the state, mild monsoon showers blessed many parts of Chhattisgarh, including the state capital and its surrounding districts. The unforeseeable weather phenomenon was welcomed by many. However, the drizzles maintained a constant pace all throughout the day and thereby also extending succour to people, who have already been under lot of stress and panic, amidst unforgiving humid climate that had enveloped most of the parts of the state for over past 4 days. Particularly, the much-needed drizzles also partially helped the Raipurians, who were under ‘panic-buying’ mode ahead of 7-days lockdown commencing in state capital from Tuesday.

Reports reaching here also affirmed that Katekalyan area in restive Dantewada district and Dhamtari seems to be blessed by ‘Rain God’ himself, as the two districts received considerable rainfalls. Dantewada’s forested Katekalyan area, which is also Maoist-afflicted, alone recorded for 90 mm whereas life in Dhamtari district was disturbed with 5 hours of constant rains that led to four major rivers here including Sitanadi, Mahanadi, Aathdahra and Sondhu to swell beyond. In Dhamatri district, according to reports received, rains led the swollen rivers waters to gush past the bridges above 5 feet.

A flash flood like situation in Sihawa town of the district, where low-lying areas were submerged dye to the heavy water gush of Mahanadi River. While Prem Nagar, a low-lying slum of Dhamtari was worst hit, the National Highway which connects the district with neighbouring state of Odisha through Borai-Sihawa also remained inoperable for sometime due to this sudden weather twist triggering local water surrounding water bodies to overflow in all directions. Yet, an alert local district administration immediately swung into action and took necessary steps to deal with the fallout of inclement weather.Senior Meteorologist of MeT Center, Raipur H P Chandra said that a low pressure area lies over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Odisha associated with a cyclonic circulation extending upto 7.6km above mean sea levelon Monday. Similarly, the Monsoon trough at mean sea level also passes through Phalodi, Ajmer, Guna, Jabalpur, Champa (Chhittasgarh) and North coastal Odisha while east-west shear zone runs across peninsular India tilting across cyclonic circulation associated with the mentioned low pressure area. Under the influence of these systems, MeT Center has warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorm accompanied with lighting expected at isolated places over the state on September 22.

However, there is no warning later on with chances of rain or thundershowers likely at many places over the state from September 23 to 25. The sky will be generally cloudy with possibility of rain or thundershowers in Raipur on Tuesday. Rainfall was recorded at many places across the state during the day which includes twin city of Durg-Bhilai receiving 38.6mm rainfall, followed by Bilaspur – 35.4mm, Pendra Road – 19.0mm, Rajnandgaon – 17.2mm, Raipur 15.6mm, Jagdalpur – 3mm, Ambikapur – 2.8mm while below 2mm rainfall was received at several areas.
