RATTLED by the growing number of brutal murder cases in the city, the Nagpur Police are now involved in preparation of a big data to launch mass preventive action against criminals involved in murder, attempt to murder and other body offences reported in last 20 years. Top officials believe the exercise will be a potent remedy to contain the growing graph of murders. A senior official informed ‘The Hitavada’ that all police stations and Crime Branch units are involved in the data gathering exercise. Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar has prepared a format as per which police station officials have been asked to send the information.

After taking over reins of Nagpur Police, Kumar had ordered to shut down all kinds of illegal activities in the city. Many dreaded goons including Santosh Ambekar, Vijay Mate, Raju Bhadre and others are cooling heels behind the bars for the last one year and presence of big gangs is almost negligible in the Second Capital. Some criminals were booked under MPDA and MCOCA in the last three years. Despite this, the cops are finding it hard to control serious body offences including murders. The most serious offence - murder - has become a regular feature in the city over very small issues. Police are attributing the crimes to old rivalry as the basic reason.

In the current data gathering exercise on criminals for the last 20 years, police have been asked to get information of their rivals too. An official said, some of the criminals active in the last two decades have already died. However, many remaining notorious anti-socials elements are still creating troubles for commoners in the city and are also running illegal dens. After the latest date gathering exercise, the criminals and their rivals will be called by the police and their disputes will be resolved by grilling them ‘professionally’.

Those who do not mend their ways will be taught a ‘lesson’ by initiating preventive action. The data gathering exercise will have a crucial role for police station officials as they are the most important part of policing. They have information about every single criminal element active in areas under their jurisdiction. If the Police Station In-charges involve pro-actively in policing then many body offences can be prevented, it is believed by the top officials while planning the massive data collection.
