Two militants have been killed in other encounters in J&K’s Anantnag, and Bandipora districts
FIVE Army personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were martyred in a fierce gunfight with terrorists during an anti-insurgency operation in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, officials said. The operation was launched in a village close to Dera Ki Gali (DKG) in Surankote in the early hours following the Intelligence inputs about presence of terrorists, a Defence spokesman said. He said the ultras opened heavy fire on the search parties resulting in critical injuries to the JCO and four other ranks. All the five soldiers succumbed to their injuries. A fresh encounter broke out on Monday afternoon between the Indian Army personnel and terrorists wherein one jawan was injured. As per the Indian Army sources, “An encounter is going on between Army troops and terrorists in the Poonch area around 2 kilometres from the site where a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and four jawans of Indian Army were injured in anti-terrorist operations and later lost their lives.
An Army personnel is injured in this encounter.” All the five soldiers succumbed to their injuries at a nearby military hospital where they were shifted from the scene of the gunfight, he said. The encounter with the terrorists was going on and further details are awaited, the spokesman said on Monday. There has been a spurt in terrorist attacks in recent weeks in which several civilians, including a prominent Kashmiri Pandit businessman and a school teacher, were killed. The officials said there were inputs about the presence of a group of heavily-armed terrorists in Chamrer forest after they managed to sneak from across the LoC. After the initial encounter, the terrorists fled to nearby Bhangai village, which falls in Rajouri district, and an encounter is underway to neutralise the ultras, they said, adding all possible escape routes have been plugged. Meanwhile, a fresh encounter has started between terrorists and security forces at Tulran Imamsahab area in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday, officials said.

Security forces had launched a cordon and search operation at Khagund in Anantnag district’s Verinag area following information about the presence of militants there. The search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the forces, who retaliated, he said. One militant has been killed, a policeman suffered injuries. He added that the operation is going on. In another encounter, which broke out at Gundjahangir in Bandipora district’s Hajin area, a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was killed. “Killed terrorist has been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeT (TRF). He was involved in recent civilian killing at Shahgund Bandipora,” IGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar tweeted. The Punjab Government on Monday announced an ex gratia of Rs 50 lakh and a Government job each for the families of three soldiers from the State killed in a gunfight.
