NAGPUR Municipal Corporation (NMC) had a few months ago decided to develop grounds in six constituencies. The officials, including Sports Committee Chairman Pramod Tabhane, also selected the grounds to be developed and maintain. But after almost four months, nothing concrete has happened, at least at the Marartoli ground in West Nagpur. This ground was the first to be selected to be renovated and developed. It was announced that the ground would have a compound wall with gates, water facilities along with urinals and also green gym for the residents of the area. But today, the ground has turned into a ‘den’ for anti-social elements and has become a dumping area. Residents have written letters to higher authorities, including Divisional Commissioner, NMC Health Department Officials, Corporator but their requests fell on deaf ears.
Members of Shiv Bhola Krida Mandal have repeatedly requested the authorities to take the matter on urgent basis and make the ground playable. “At nights anti-socials consume liquor here and throw empty bottles all over the ground. The broken bottles increase the risk of injuring kids who play on the ground,” said one of the residents of Marartoli on condition of anonymity. “This is the only ground in our area where people use it for morning and evening walks. The condition of the ground is getting from bad to worse. We have submitted written complaints to the Health officer of Dharampeth Zone II on September 29 but till now nothing has happened,” he said. “There is a big pit in the centre of the ground which can injure any kid. We have approached the NMC officials on many occaions but in vain,” rued the residents. It’s high time NMC start developing the grounds which it had promised a few months ago.
