The power generation at Khaparkheda Thermal Power Station (KTPS) will remain affected for next few days as the officials of KTPS are yet to restore the conveyor belt of the coal handling plant that was damaged in a massive fire on Wednesday.
KTPS has total of five generation units including one with installed capacity of 500 MW and four units of 210 MW each (total 840 MW). Chief Engineer of KTPS Raju Ghuge informed ‘The Hitavada’ that the restoration work was going on at war-footing with the help of workers. “We are trying to restore the conveyor belt operation in the next two or three days to resume power generation,” he said. Asked about the reason behind the fire, Ghuge claimed that the reason was not yet known as the officials of the Fire Department were inspecting the spot.
As per the report of MahaGenco on Friday, KTPS showed 389 MW of power while generation at Koradi Thermal Power Station was 1988 MW. Chandrapur Thermal Power Station, another important coal-based power generation unit of MahaGenco in Vidarbha, was operating at 1950 MW.
It may be mentioned that the conveyor belt was badly damaged in the fire that lasted for an hour. Every power generation unit has a separate coal bunker for storage of coal. The units were closed one by one after the bunkers ran out of coal. The 500 MW capacity unit was not affected in the fire as it has a special coal handling plant.
