COMETH the hour, cometh the man. A big innings was due from him. After several scores of under 30s, Vidarbha captain Faiz Fazal rose to the occasion as he hit an unbeaten 102 in the must-win game for Vidarbha against Jammu and Kashmir and escorted his side to the prequarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare One-Day Tournament played at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, BKC, Mumbai on Tuesday. The crucial five-wicket win helped Vidarbha finish Elite Group A at the second position behind Himachal Pradesh with 12 points.
Himachal also have 12 points but have a better net run-rate of 0.551 as compared to Vidarbha’s (0.210). Vidarbha will now take on Tripura in prequarters on December 18. Asked to bat first, Jammu and Kashmir were bundled out for 233 from 49.3 overs. Pacer Yash Thakur and spinner Aditya Sarvate took three wickets each. Vidarbha then rode on Fazal’s unbeaten 102 from 110 balls which had 12 boundaries to cross the line with 42 balls and five wickets remaining. Apoorv Wankhade scored 79 runs from 80 deliveries which included eight balls to the fence and two over it to make it an easy win for Vidarbha.
