THE ‘Woman of the Year Award’ bestowed upon legendary Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George by the World Athletics is true recognition of the sporting icon’s achievements and also her leadership qualities that are helping the country produce more skilled athletes. Anju is the first Indian to be honoured by the world body of athletics which gives the country great pride. Anju George’s long jumping career has been a roller coaster ride where she had to endure many a heartbreak in world events.

Her Olympics medal dream fell short by a whisker in Athens in 2004 but she remains the proud owner of the record of being the only Indian to have won a medal in the World Championships. Her bronze medal in the 2003 edition has acted as an inspiration for the next generation of athletes and Anju has taken it upon herself to groom the future talents in her training academy. Such gestures are products of an unhindered love for the game and the country. Anju’s commitment for athletics is unparalleled as is her leadership position in the administration of athletics. The ‘Woman of the Year’ Award has acknowledged all these qualities of our sporting icon.
