In Union Budget 2021-22, a special mention of Nagpur Metro was made for construction of new route of 43.8 km for extension of rail services

In a major boost to realty sector and fulfilling long standing aspiration of citizens, Phase-II of Nagpur Metro got thumbs-up in Union Budget presented for year 2021-22 on Monday. An outlay of Rs 5,976 crore was approved for construction of 43.8 km new route as part of extension to existing metro network. The extension would strengthen presence of metro on corridors on East-West and North-South area of city.

Phase-II would further ensure seamless connectivity to city with its emerging suburbs and for it the thrust on improvement in transportation network in the Union Budget. The Detail Project Report (DPR) for Phase-II was already approved by Maharashtra Government and routed to Central Government about two years back. Already, in Phase-I 38 km of network is almost ready with two sections on North-South and East-West corridors also commencing commercial services of Nagpur Metro successfully. Hopefully the extension of metro network would now rightly boost the footfalls since for long distance travel it is the most safest bet along with less taxing on the users pockets. By end of the year North Nagpur and East Nagpur segments of Nagpur Metro would also see starting of commercial services and this is going to ensure big boost in ridership. By that time the impact of COVID-19 epidemic might also lessen and mostly the colleges and schools would start functioning with full strength and for students the Metro services would one good opportunity for end to end rider, for home to education institution and back.

The proposed Phase-II will be spread over 43.8 km length with 32 stations covering entire outskirts on all four side. For example, on Kamptee Road the current end is Automotive Square but most of the working class travels daily from Kanhan and Kamptee towns to city for various petty jobs. Also they are dependent on wholesale markets of city for their various needs.

So in a way the extension till Kanhan would also provide connectivity for various townships that have sprang up on Kamptee Road. The entire Phase II network is going to remain elevated and on all four side they would run through middle of the roads that are wide enough to accommodate the metro pillars. The first phase of Maha Metro Nagpur is progressing well and as per scheduled timelines. Phase I has four corridors of 38 Km length with a total of 38 stations. While the construction of viaduct is already finished, work on station buildings on East and North Nagpur corridors is currently going on in full swing. Nagpur Metro press release mentioned that Phase II of project will enable easy, faster and comfortable journey form one part of Nagpur to other. This will particularly help those employed in industrial areas of Nagpur and have to commute long-distance on daily basis.
