THE Tropical Forest Research Institute (TFRI) Jabalpur’s Detailed Project Report for rejuvenation of river Narmada through forestry intervention has been given green signal by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEF&CC). The suggested interventions focus to address three major issues related to river i.e., land degradation in catchment areas, sediment run-off and decreased e-flow.
 
Dr G Rajeshwar Rao, Director TFRI, informed that a mammoth task of preparing DPR of 13 rivers was taken up by various institutes under Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Dehradun. Out of 13 DPRs, nine have been submitted to and approved by the ministry. TFRI meticulously proposed a total of 51 site-specific models for agricultural, natural and urban landscapes after conducting 16 consultative meeting in the four states with State Forest dSepartments, academicians, scientists, researchers, bureaucrats and various other stakeholders. The scheme will rejuvenate 83,962.39 hectare of Narmada river basin of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Gujrat states through which the river flows. An amount of Rs. 2127.28 crores were proposed for five years, of which an amount of Rs.1482.40 crores will be for Madhya Pradesh to carry out conservation and forestry interventions in the river scape. The implementation of DPR will be carried out by the respective State Forest Departments and other government agencies.
