A major fire broke out in VICCO Laboratories unit in MIDC Hingna area, leading to the collapse of its ground and two upper floors on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Entire material and machinery worth crores of rupees gutted in the fire, informed Chief Fire Officer (CFO) of Nagpur Municipal Corporation Rajendra Uchke. The fire broke out around 10 pm on Sunday and the Fire Department received the information at 10.40 pm.

Earlier, fire tenders from MIDC area were pressed into the fire fighting operation. When they failed to control the blaze, the call was given to NMC’s Fire Department. Six fire tenders of NMC, two of MIDC, one each from Wadi Municipal Council and Kalmeshwar Municipal Council were involved in the fire fighting operation from Sunday night. CFO Uchke was himself present at the spot during the operation. Such was the intensity of the fire that even after pressing over 10 fire tenders into service, the flames were leaping high and could be seen from nearly a kilometre’s distance.

Due to the intense heat of the blaze, the ground floor and two upper floors of the structure collapsed, Uchke said and added that wax and alcohol stored in the premises were making it difficult to douse the fire. Spraying of water and foam mixture also not helped firefighters to control the fire. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported in the incident as no employee was present in the company when fire broke out. The fire came under control on Monday afternoon. Firefighters were busy trying to douse the flames completely till Monday night. CFO Uchke said “The reason behind the fire will be investigated once the fire comes under complete control,” he added.
