A government doctor has been arrested for alleged involvement in an abortion case of a tribal girl. The accused identified as Dr Mamta Rani Behera, a native of Raighar district (Odisha), was arrested from her maternal house in Rangpuri South West, Delhi. She was brought to Dhamtari on transit remand obtained from Patiala House court and sent on judicial remand. The incident occurred under Sihava police station limits. Confirming the incident, AJJAK DSP Sarika Vaidya said that a letter had been written to HoD of accused regarding the arrest. The accused had been reportedly absconding since the time of incident in January 2021.
 
“So far, a total of five accused have been arrested in this connection”, the DSP added. Earlier, police arrested Lokesh Tiwari, his father Devraj Tiwari, mother Rewti Tiwari and their relative Sandhya Sharma. The accused were charged under Sections 376, 313, 316, 120 b and 34 of IPC; sections 6 and 17 of Protection of Children against Sexual Offences act and section 3(2)(V) of SC/ST Act. Lokesh allegedly outraged modesty of victim and his parents took her to their relative’s house in Odisha where Dr Mamta Rani Behera conducted abortion. On the complaint of victim’s father, police arrested Lokesh and his family members. Dr Behera had left the place learning that FIR has been registered against Lokesh and others. Police had been searching Dr Behera. Recently it was tipped-off that she was in Delhi. A team of police personnel reached Delhi and arrested her.
