Alfiya ousts Hungarian Reka to storm into AIBA world youth SF

INDIA boxer and pride of Maharashtra and Nagpur Alfiya Tarannum Akram Khan Pathan stormed into the semi-final of the Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships 2021 under way in Kielce, Poland. In the quarter-final bout, Alfiya showed superb form and fitness to notch up an easy 5-0 win over Hungary’s Reka Hoffmann in women’s heavy weight (+81kg category) match on Sunday evening. Alifya looked in complete control throughout the match and made Reka work hard with her swift movement and precise punches.
 
The lanky pugilist from Nagpur, who is ranked India Number 1 in junior category, dominated the bout from the beginning and was all over her opponent from Hungary. She landed her punches on the right place at the right time to floor Reka and impressed the five judges. Her semis entry also assured her as well as India a medal. In the semi-finals on Tuesday, Alfiya will lock horns with host Poland’s Olivia Toborek who defeated Russia’s Tatiana Bogdanova. Alfiya has made the podium her own as she is finishing in top three since 2016 when she won the silver medal in 62nd National School Games (80 kg). She then bettered her performance and won gold medal in the 63rd National School Games in 2017- (80 kg).
 
Her gold winning spree continued as she claimed another yellow metal at 1st Khelo India School Games in Delhi, 2018 (80 kg) and then added another at the 64rd National School Games, 2018 (60kg). At international level she won her first medal at the 2nd Junior Nation Cup, Vrbas in 2018 when she won silver medal. She then won a bronze at the same competition next year and then won a gold at Asian Junior Girls Championship in 2019. Last month, Alfiya won gold medal for India in the 30th Adriatic Pearl Tournament in Budva, Montenegro. Officials of Maharashtra Boxing Association and Nagpur District Boxing Associaiton wished Alfiya luck for semis.
