Unsolved murder cases piling up as police grope in dark

DESPITE boasting of latest technologies, having deep network, knowledge of crime and criminals, Nagpur city police have failed to make headway in a number of cases related to murder of senior citizens. For too long these cases have remained undetected and seem to have got buried in the files at police stations. Mystery surrounding the death of innocent citizens is still a challenge for the police as some smart criminals have been able to avoid detection for too long. ‘The Hitavada’ presents a list of some cases between 2014 and 2016 where the police ended up doing a wild goose chase.

Bhagwati Chanda murder case (2014) When the body of Bhagwati Sunil Chanda (70) was found at Ambedkar Nagar, Wadi, on November 10, 2014 the cops treated it as a routine case. However, after receipt of the post-mortem report, it turned out to be death by strangulation. The elderly woman was found dead near her house. The lady was strangled with her saree. Someone had very carefully planned the murder and police are still not able to find out perpetrators of the crime.

Roshni Petkar murder case (2015) Murder case of Roshni Petkar (62), a resident of Deen Prajahit Society, Narendra Nagar, was registered in the jurisdiction of Ajni police station. This was one of the brutal murders as family members told cops that two masked robbers had stormed their house and wrapped cello tape around her neck on October 7, 2015. After the robbers fled the spot, a neighbour had rushed her to the hospital where she was declared dead. This incident was quite shocking as it happened in broad daylight that too in a dense residential locality.

Vasundhara Bal murder case (2015) The killers of Vasundhara alias Jayshree Bal (60) are roaming freely as the police have failed to identify them till date. The widow of late Dr Anand S Bal, ex-scientist with NEERI, and a resident of I-26, Tatya Tope Nagar, was found motionless at her house on October 7, 2015. The housemaid informed Rana Pratap Nagar police about the incident. The police had investigated the case but were unable to make headway till date.

Jagan Kodape murder case (2016) Priest of Kali Mata temple in Defence area, Jagan Kodape (75) was killed by robbers on May 28, 2016. The burglars had barged into the temple and decamped with valuables. Wadi police may have closed the case after groping in dark for months.

Pramila Kanfade murder case (2016) On November 18, 2016, Pramilabai Marotrao Kanfade (62) was stabbed to death with a knife at her house in the Koradi area. She was a resident of Dudhat Layout, Mahadula. Five years have passed but the Koradi police have failed to identify the culprits. All the incidents point to a fact that cops may be best at solving conventional murders, when the motive is clear and suspicion is on some close people in network. Solving murder of a goon is also a matter of routine for the system. But when it comes to crime with a different modus operandi, the cops have been found wanting. In all the aforesaid cases the cops could not move ahead in absence of any credible motive, as their theories of involvement of someone close to one or known rival got ruled out. Despite racking their brains and examining all angles, cops have continued to hit the dead-end forcing them to either abandon the case or move on to the next thing at hand. Further, as one analyses these unsolved cases, the killers might also have got away due to their good luck. Or perhaps, they were a lot smarter and ensured that not a single evidence was left at the spot to hoodwink the system.
