Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan delegation called upon Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday about the Silger movement and urged them to take necessary steps so that atrocities against innocent tribal population can be stopped. The delegation that paid a courtesy call on the Governor and the Chief Minister included Human Rights activist Bela Bhatia, Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan Convener Alok Shukla, Chhattisgarh Kisan Sabha President Sanjay Parate and ACTU General Secretary Bijendra Tiwari. The delegation members discussed various topics related to the Silger movement with the Chief Minister. During the meeting the Chief Minister informed the delegation that a magisterial probe on the Silger incident is underway at present. The state government is ready to meet the development related needs of people in the area.
He appealed to the members of social organizations to come forward and cooperate with the State Government in various development works. During the meeting Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Subrat Sahoo, Special DG (Anti Naxal Operations) Ashok Juneja were also present. During the meeting the delegation members complained to both the Governor and the Chief Minister against the Bijapur district administration and registered their strong protest for not letting them to visit Silger while alleging that the whole Bastar division has been converted into a police state and there is nothing called government control on the administration.
The delegation urged the Governor as being the custodian of the Constitution, to immediately intervene and ensure implementation of PESA and provisions laid under Schedule 5 of the Constitution in the Bastar region. In the memorandum submitted to both the Governor and the Chief Minister, the delegation while raking up the issue of injustice meted against tribal population during previous BJP regime and murders taking place in the name of so called encounters being held during the present Congress regime as state sponsored and demanded high level judicial enquiry in all such incidents. They also demanded that officials who’re responsible for such incidents should be identified and punished. They stated that from a democratically elected government and administration it is expected that they will react democratically against peaceful democratic movements.
Unfortunately, there is a severe crisis of such democratic approach in Bastar region, where every tribal is considered as a Maoist and every movement is considered as Maoist sponsored, an approach which is very dangerous for democracy. Delegation urged the state government to stop displacement of tribals from their own lands. State Government should initiate dialogue with the tribal villagers of Silger and try to solve impasse.
