As predicted, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has announced name of Duneshwar Pethe as its Nagpur city chief. By selecting Pethe, NCP has given clear indication that it wants to spread its wings in Nagpur city. It was a sheer and pleasant coincidence that the announcement was made on the eve of party’s foundation day. NCP would be completing 22 years of its existence on Thursday as it was founded on June 10, 1999. Pethe was the front runner for the post when Anil Ahirkar had submitted resignation one and a half years ago. The resignation was not accepted and the issue remained pending. Meanwhile corona pandemic had taken over the discussion over change of guard in city unit had stopped. But after the Assembly elections, NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar strongly felt that the party requires a strong base in Nagpur. The changes in Nagpur is the outcome of that thought. After the induction of Abha Pandey into party fold now NCP appointed mass leader like Duneshwar Pethe.
There was some resistance from some leaders in the party to change Ahirkar so he was given State Vice Presidentship of the Party and Pethe was brought in in his place. This time senior leader of the Party and Rajya Sabha Member Praful Patel batted for Pethe. Finally Jayant Patil, State President of the Party has given him the letter of appointment in presence of Patel, Pravin Kunte Patil, Vidarbha in-charge and some other leaders. While talking to ‘The Hitavada’, before the meeting of the party began, Jayant Patil said, “We will be giving the baton to Pethe with a strong hope that he would steer the party to a different height. He himself being corporator, he would strengthen Party’s position in the upcoming municipal elections.” Meanwhile the party workers in large number gathered at the Nagpur airport to welcome their new chief Duneshwar Pethe. Earlier also the volunteers gathered at the party’s Ganeshpeth office and celebrated the appointment by distributing sweets and raising slogans.
Shailendra Tiwari, the youth president of the Party, said that in the form of Duneshwar Pethe, the party has appointed a person with a good and clean image who has a mass base. The party will definitely benefit. In the coming municipal elections, the party will take power in Nagpur Municipal Corporation under the leadership of Duneshwar Pethe. Pethe said, “Whatever the responsibility is bestowed upon me I would prove them right. I shall have guidance of all senior leaders in Nagpur and under them I would do my job honestly.” Earlier NCP celebrated Duneshwar Pethe’s appointment. Those present during the celebration include Nationalist Youth Congress President Shailendra Tiwari, Santosh Singh, Amol Parpalliwar, Amit Pichkate, Shiv Bhende, Rizwan Ansari, Dayashankar Dubey, Sufi Tiger, Rahul Pandey, Pranay Jambulkar, Anil Bokde, Shekhar Patil, Satyam Mishra, Tusharsinh Bhati, Vishwas Pakkide, Sandeep Mendhe, Ravi Marshettiwar, Anand Chahande, Praveen Patil.
