Undertrial mounts attack on inmates, three prisoners injured

High drama prevailed in Central Jail, after an undertrial cut loose and went on attacking spree leaving three others injured, one of them seriously. The incident has sent shock waves in the jail administration as well as city police as the accused undertrial is same who is facing trial for killing five of his own family members. The accused is identified as Vivek Gulabrao Palatkar (37), a resident of Nandanvan. He is lodged at Central Jail as the trail in the gory murders of five members of his family is currently on.
 
The incident according to information occurred on Saturday night. Anup Kumre, Superintendent, Central Jail, informed ‘The Hitavada’ that Palatkar, Raju Mohanlal Verma (54), a resident of Plot No. 108, Chintamani Nagar, Old Kamptee Road, Roy and Thakur, are lodged in Barrack no. 7. An argument ensued between Palatkar and Verma over some old matter and it is now learnt the two were not on talking terms and would not see eye to eye. Palatkar it is claimed tied a stone to a dupatta and attacked with it on the Verma's head who was taken by surprise. Verma too is lodged in prison for murdering a vegetable vendor during the year at Mangalwari Bazar. Sensing Palatkar's mood the other inmates in the barrack, Atmaram Pannal Roy, and Ganesh Pratapsingh Thakur stepped in to save Verma but their combined power too fell short to control the attacker. Alerted by the commotion, Jail staff rushed in with full force and pinned down Palatkar.
 
However, it was quite a sight as on one hand Verma was profusely bleeding and two others were lying in corners and nursing their injuries while the other inmates in state of shock. The Jail staff had a tough time taming down Palatkar as he was raging with fire. The sources Palatkar's reputation is quite bad in the Jail and the staffers are told to keep a close eye as he is labelled at dangerous. Meanwhile the seriously injured Verma was quickly rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where he was treated upon. Later, he was shifted back to the Jail and admitted in the in-house hospital. Roy and Thakur escaped with multiple injuries but their condition is reported to be stable. 
 
Palatkar lodged in ‘Anda cell’ Anup Kumre, Jail Superintendent, informed that Vivek Palatkar, he hailed from Mauda and was residing in Nandanvan area, is now lodged in jail's anda cell (egg-shaped high security block) after the incident as preventive measure. "We do not want to put life of jail inmates in danger,” said Kumre, giving reason for isolating Palatkar". It may be mentioned that Palatkar had killed five persons including his daughter, sister, brother-in-law, nephew in Aradhana Nagar area of Nandanvan on June 11, 2018. Earlier, Palatkar was convicted by a Sessions court in his wife’s murder case and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
