The police will register First Information Report (FIR) on mobile phone soon as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Maharashtra has proposed installation of new hi-tech and user-friendly software for Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS). The software will be used in hand-held devices including mobile phone and tablets after downloading the application from Playstore, informed a police official. Currently, the cops are using CCTNS software which was provided by National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) for last seven years.

The current software provides facility of registration of FIR on Laptops or Computers only. After using the software for long period, the police officials have observed some glitches in the software. The issue was discussed by the top rank police officials and decided to introduce new software for the State Police that can be used in the hand-held devices. After installation of new software, the police personnel can perform Panchanama on the crime spot in their mobile phones and also register FIR after recording statements of victims, the official said. The software will be synchronised with the central database just like old software, he added. The CCTNS has a central database to provide national-level search facility as well as crime analytics for use by police and central agencies. Sources claimed that a detailed proposal was sent to State Home Department. After receiving permission from the department, the CID will float a tender for new software, claimed sources.

The CCTNS project was unveiled in Maharashtra in September 2015. Since January 1, 2016, all police stations have been registering first information reports (FIRs) digitally on the system. A top rank official informed that more than around four lakh FIRs are being registered in the CCTV system every year in Maharashtra. CCTNS is a complex project with the project activities being undertaken by a number of stakeholders. It has enhanced efficiency and efficacy of policing at all levels by adopting the principles of e-Governance.

The project was evolved as Mission Mode Project (MMP) under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) and more than 11,000 police stations and 600 supervisory offices of the state police have been brought under CCTNS loop. The CCTNS facilitates the process of filing complaints and follow-up, which is available at the click of a mouse. The ambitious project has already brought lot of changes in the functioning of the police force as it fully computerised process of crime registration, investigation and prosecution, he said.
