The Central Ammunition Depot (CAD), Pulgaon which is the country’s major ammunition depot has constructed check dams for water storage. Also, it has converted all low-lying areas in its premises into rainwater catchment areas to increase the groundwater level throughout the year. CAD Pulgaon is located in Wardha district which faces water shortage during summer. The depot has been at the forefront of developmental and ecological activities that have benefited the entire region and its inhabitants. The ecologically sensitive activities of the depot have ensured a safe haven for the growth and prosperity of a large wildlife population including Nilgai, spotted deer, wild boar, langurs, porcupines, different species of snakes and varied species of birds.
The green initiatives by the Army has resulted in a marked increase in water level and also a substantial increase in wildlife population of the region. In the past few months, the depot administration has conducted meetings with the local elected leaders, Sarpanchs and Local farmers to increase the water level and the green cover of the premises. The unit has tied up with the forest department and has planted more than 30,000 saplings in the cantonment area and 20,000 more saplings are under collection.
The depot has additionally planted over 40,000 ‘Seed Balls’ with its own resources. It has been learnt that some ‘Steel Security Coils’ which were noticed and could have harmed the wildlife were removed by the depot administration. It also said that the Indian Army is very much sensitive about the ecological balance and protection of the flora and fauna. The fact that most of the wildlife in the country is present around military cantonments is because of the ecological sensitiveness of the Indian Army.
