FORMER national-level athlete Sayali Waghmare, who was recently appointed as coach by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for its ambitious project ‘Khelo India’ for its Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) centre, was felicitated by Nagpur District Athletics Association (NDAA) on Tuesday. Sayali was honoured at the hands of Corporator Nagesh Sahare, Vice-President, NDAA. Speaking on the occasion, Sahare said, “Khelo India training centres will help in proper training of athletes with an eye on the Olympics after eight years. It is a very good opportunity for Sayali to prepare players who can win medals for India.” Pramod Tabhane, Chairman, Sports Committee, Nagpur Municipal Corporation was chief guest on the occasion.
 
Addressing the gathering he said, “It will be of prime importance for the coaches to look after the youngsters in the age group of 10-18 years. They must also assure that apart from preparing Olympic medal winners, the players grow as an individual with pleasing personality. SAI having one of its important centre in Nagpur is a matter of pride for Nagpur Municipal Corporation.” Replying to the felicitation, Sayali said, “Nagpur has seen my performance as a player. Now, I am also eager to prove my mettle in coaching. I have got a huge opportunity due to Khelo India project. I will work hard and with dedication to ensure that Nagpur produces Olympic level athletes in coming eight years.” Gurudeo Nagrale, President, NDAA presided over the felicitation function.
 
Dr Sharad Suryawanshi, Secretary, NDAA; Krida Bharati’s Sanjay Lokhande, sports statistician Naresh Shelke and Jitendra Ghordadekar, President, District Selection Committee were prominently present. Archana Kottewar, Joint Secretary, NDAA made introductory remarks. Ramchandra Wani, Senior Jt Secy, NDAA conducted the proceedings while Ganesh Wani, Secretary, Bharatiya Vyayam Prasark Mandal proposed a vote of thanks. Nitin Dhabekar, Ichcha Sahare, Priya Bhowte, Bhushan Dharpure, Varsha Salunkhe, Akshay Pal and Harshkumar Singh worked hard for the event.
