DR Jyotsna Sudhir Meshram, Professor & Head of Post Graduate (PG) Teaching Department of Chemistry, RTM Nagpur University, committed suicide by jumping from the ninth floor of Radiance Fortune Siri Apartment, Manish Nagar, in the wee hours of Monday. She was the widow of Dr Sudhir Umaji Meshram, former Vice-Chancellor of Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon and ex-Professor & Head of PG Department of Microbiology, RTM Nagpur University. Dr Jyotsna (56) ended her life by jumping from the kitchen gallery of her maternal aunt’s ninth floor flat No 904, C-Wing, Fortune Siri Apartment around 4.30 am. She was a resident of Ashtavinayak Nagar, Jaitala. A week ago, she returned from the United States of America after meeting her son and daughter-in-law.
However, the reason behind Dr Jyotsna taking the extreme step could not be ascertained so far. Preliminary investigations revealed that she was quite depressed after her husband Dr Sudhir Meshram’s death. Dr Sudhir, who was also the founder Director of Rajiv Gandhi Biotech Centre, RTM Nagpur University, died of cardiac disease in March this year. A popular professor in academic circles, Dr Jyotsna and her team were making arrangements for the visit of National Assessment and Accreditation Council’s (NAAC) Committee to the university. For Rakshabandhan festival on Sunday, Dr Jyotsna had visited her maternal aunt’s house on ninth floor at Fortune Siri Apartment from where she jumped off the balcony. After recording the statement of Vinay Rajaram Khobragade (64), Beltarodi Police registered a case under Section 174 of Code of Criminal Procedure and started investigations.
