A DHAKA-BOUND Bangladesh flight had to make an emergency landing at Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport on Friday morning when its pilot suffered severe cardiac attack and became unconscious. The pilot is being treated at a private hospital where a senior cardiologist is monitoring his condition.
The Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-022 was on its way from Muscat to Dhaka with 126 passengers on board on Friday morning. The plane was near Raipur when captain Nawshad Ataul Quaiyum suffered a heart-attack. The co-pilot contacted Kolkata Air Traffic Control (ATC) for an emergency landing and was advised to land at Nagpur which was the nearest airport. The Boeing aircraft landed at Dr Ambedkar Airport at 11.40 am.
Authorities at Nagpur airport immediately contacted Kingsway Hospital for medical help after which the pilot was taken to the hospital under the supervision of critical care specialist Dr Itheshamuddin.
Dr Shailendra Ganjewar, cardiologist treating the pilot, informed ‘The Hitavada’ that Nawshad Ataul Quaiyum was still in coma and picture about his health would become clear on Saturday.
“The 45-year-old patient is had a severe cardiac arrest when he was in the cockpit. When he was brought to the hospital, he was suffering from hypoxia i.e. a condition where not enough oxygen makes it to the cells and tissues in the body. Our team members gave him Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). We are monitoring the situation
and picture will be clearer on Saturday,” Dr Ganjewar said.
Initially, the aircraft was parked at Bay area. Meanwhile, airline officials were trying to connect with its office in Bangladesh. Accordingly, the Dhaka-Sharjah flight brought two pilots. The flight landed at Nagpur Airport and after dropping these two pilots it took off for Sharjah. And the aircraft which was parked at Bay at Nagpur took off at 10 pm.
As per protocol an aircraft needs both the pilots for its operation. The plane will now remained stationed at Nagpur till another pilot arrives in the city.
