Nagpur district administration has put people living in low-lying areas especially farmers on high alert following increase in flood level at medium reservoirs in the district for next couple of days. The administration on Tuesday issued a red alert to people living in villages on the banks of the rivers. The administration opened three gates of Wadgaon and seven gates of Nand dams due to high water level in Vena river on Tuesday morning. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rains from September 21 to 24 in all over Vidarbha including Nagpur district. Keeping this warning in mind, the district administration issued the alert to all villagers residing near the river banks. Eight out of 11 medium dams in Nagpur district have already crossed the 100% mark and many of them started overflowing. As a result the authority opened the gates of Wadgaon and Nand.

 

The authority may open more gates of other dams in next couple of days which will increase the water level in rivers and also create flood-like situation. In the alert, the administration said, people must be alert and follow weather news, alerts, issued by the adminstration and the weather department; avoid flood areas while commuting; avoid entering in river during flood situation; avoid taking shelter under dilapidated shades or constructions during heavy rains; avoid crossing any bridge which is full with flood water; and avoid any rumours. According to weather department, “A low pressure area lies over southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height.”

 

Similarly, a trough runs from cyclonic circulation associated with the Low Pressure Area over southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood to Telangana across interior Odisha at 3.1 km above mean sea level. “Under these influence, widespread rainfall is very likely to occur over Vidarbha during September 21 to 24 with heavy falls at isolated places,” said IMD. On Tuesday, Nagpur city received 32 mm rainfall which was observed in the morning. The heavy rains on Tuesday caused water-logging at many places in the city including Narendra Nagar RuB, Shankar Nagar Square, Jhansirani Square, Medical Square, Automative Square, Padole Square etc. Washim (54 mm), Chandrapur (48.4 mm), Gadchiroli (36 mm), Bramhapuri (17 mm) and Gondia (8.8 mm) also received good rains in Vidarbha in last 24 hours. More such rains will be observed on Wednesday also.
