The Nagpur Agriculture Produce Market committee (APMC), Nagpur, one the biggest market yards in the country, is working on an ambitious proposal of installing solar panels at its facility here in the city. The market committee is also exploring opportunities to convert vegetable waste into manure. Apart from this, the APMC in its meeting of board of directors held here on Monday, further decided to take up various developmental projects aimed at making the yard one of the best facilities in the country. The board of directors unanimously passed 44 such developmental projects which will be implemented in a phased manner in the next 20 years. Chairman of Nagpur APMC Ahmedbhai Sheikh; Vice Chairman Prakash Nagpure; Secretary Rajesh Bhusari; and all directors attended the meeting.

Though the proposal of installing solar panels is at an initial stage, Bhusari told The Hitavada that it would give much relief to the traders based in the yard. Elaborating on the project Prakash Wadhwani, one of the directors, said solar panels will bring down traders’ expenditure on power. “At present the traders are paying heavy price for power. But with the new system in place, they will save their money,” he added. The APMC will soon approach Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) to give final shape to the proposal. Sources said that the APMC is sitting on huge savings which will enable it to go ahead with the ambitious project.

In addition, the APMC will take technical guidance from the city-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) for setting up the manure project. As the market generates huge quantity of vegetable waste every day, the same can be used for making manure. It will not only help the authorities maintain cleanliness in the yard but also generate additional revenue for the APMC. On similar lines, the APMC will soon undertake digitization of various systems in the yard, built internal roads, create processing units, etc. The facility at Kalamna, which is known as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Market Yard, is one of the biggest yards in the country.
