MIDC Hingna Industrial Area, one of the oldest industrial areas of the region, is devoid of a proper garbage collection - segregation - treatment - disposal system. The garbage collected by the Gram Panchayats namely Digdoh-Devi, Nildoh and Sonegaon-Nipani from the residential areas in the vicinity is dumped in open plots. In addition, industries and local residents too prefer dumping garbage in the areas. The situation is such that the huge mounds of garbage are burned to dispose them off and it results in smoke billowing continuously creating health hazards for people working in nearby industries and residing nearby. This also gives a shabby look to the industrial area and definitely defeats the purpose of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’. “In one earlier incident, the burning of garbage near Jayaswal NECO Industries Ltd resulted in the transformer pole catching fire and fire tenders had to be rushed up to douse the fire,” said Ravindra Burbure, Security Manager, Jayaswal NECO Industries Ltd.

“The large-scale dumping of domestic, industrial, plastic wastes is not only creating garbage zones inside the industrial area but is also severely polluting the environment,” said Prakash Soni, Chairman, Soni Polymers Pvt. Ltd. C G Shegaonkar, President – MIA Hingna, added, “To find a probable solution to this problem, MIA Hingna actively pursued with MIDC and tenders were invited twice from agencies for a proper garbage collection-segregation-treatment-disposal system at MIDC Hingna, but the tenders didn’t evoke much response from the concerned agencies.” In the recent meeting held under the chairmanship of District Collector in which Deputy CEO, Zilla Parishad Nagpur; Regional Officer, MIDC and officials of Nildoh Gram Panchayat were present, it was discussed to have a dedicated agency assigned for garbage collection and disposal at MIDC Hingna Industrial Area. But to initiate the activity and appoint an agency, at least 20-25 tonnes of garbage collection would be a prerequisite. Since the MIDC Hingna doesn’t generate that much garbage on a daily basis, hence it was decided to take into consideration the garbage generated by nearby Gram Panchayats, Nagar Parishads, Nagar Panchayats and take decision accordingly. Also, it was proposed to offer an alternative land for disposal of garbage at Butibori at the current land value which is simply unviable.

There are various spots that have become a garbage dumping zone in MIDC Hingna. The overgrown shrubs and vegetation are also a cause of security concern especially for women traveling during the evening and night hours. Sachin Jain, Secretary – MIA Hingna added that, “The garbage collection and disposal is one of the major issues of MIDC Hingna Industrial Area and MIDC Industries Association (MIA) Hingna has been constantly giving representations, following-up with concerned authorities on behalf of the industries for a proper solution to this problem.”
