In yet another major discreet operation, a joint team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) from Raipur Unit of Indore Zonal Unit (IZU) along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel intercepted a train passenger on Wednesday night at the Raipur Railway Station and recovered smuggled gold worth Rs 1.65 crore. The smuggled foreign origin gold in the form of bars weighed 3.33 kilogram.
“Based on a specific and actionable intelligence, the joint team of DRI and RPF, numbering around eight personnel intercepted an unidentified train passenger boarding in AC First Class (H1) coach of Howrah CSTL Duronto Express train (No - 12262) on Wednesday night soon after the train arrived at Platform no-1 of Raipur Railway Station at around 8.20 pm. Later, the apprehended passenger was taken to undisclosed location for the purpose of frisking and interrogation, which led to the recovery of foreign marked gold
bars weighing 3.33 kilogram from his possession. The gold bars were found to have been concealed inside his clothing by strapping on the waist, with the help of a cloth belt. The said foreign origin gold bars along with the packing material have been seized under the Customs Act, 1962,” one of the officers, who took part in the well-coordinated and synergised operations, told ‘The Hitavada’ requesting anonymity.
According to this officer, the arrested train passenger was later identified as Anil Narayan Rajai (44), a resident of Gandhi Bagh, near Sona Restaurant, in Nagpur. He boarded the train from Kolkata and was bound for Nagpur to deliver the consignment of foreign origin smuggled gold to a syndicate to which he belongs.
In between, according to an official communique by DRI (IZU), in the present case, as of now role of five members of the syndicate has been revealed. In past also this syndicate has indulged in smuggling of gold of foreign origin in huge quantities for which the payment has been made through Hawala channels. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
