CITY’S martial art player Gauri Gokhale bagged a gold medal in the 22nd Sqay Martial Art National Championship that was held at Goa recently. Representing Maharashtra in Under-18 girls 52kg category, Gauri defeated Andhra’s Vyankatlakshmi in a one-sided final 6-2 to grab the yellow metal. In the semi-final, she downed Odisha’s Shilpa. In the state championship, Gauri defeated Chandrapur’s Rutuja in the final to secure a berth in the State team for seventh time.
 
“At my home, I have a big space and I used to practise hitting the punching bag even during lockdown period. That kept me good shape, I am very delighted to have bagged gold in national and now I am concentrating on higher-level tournaments,” Gauri said while interacting with mediapersons on Monday. Gauri, a student of Sandipani Junior College, has represented India in three international championships — South Korea, Thailand and Nepal. She won golds at World Championships in South Korea and at the Asian Championship in Thailand. In a tri-nation meet in Nepal, she bagged a silver. So far Gauri has represented Maharashtra in seven national championships and have won five golds, one silver and one bronze. She gives the credit of her success to coaches Mazhar Khan, Sayyad Imtiyaz, Director of the school Rajashree Jichkar, Principal Shanti Menon and parents.
