ASHIT Singh followed up his unbeaten half century with a seven-wicket haul as Vidarbha mauled Arunachal Pradesh by an innings and 338 runs inside two days to storm into quarter-finals of the Cooch Behar Trophy at DY Patil Academy ground in Ambi, Pune on Wednesday. Ashit (52*; 77b, 2x4, 1x6), Jagjot Singh Sasan (59; 49b, 4x4, 3x6) and Tejas Soni (51*; 30b, 2x4, 4x6) all hit fifties to complement Danish Malewar’s (151; 200b, 17x4, 5x6) daddy hundred as Vidarbha declared their first innings at 435 for 6 in 103 overs. Ashit (10-3-28-7) then ran through the Arunachal innings to bundle them out for a poor score of 59 in 21 overs for a huge win with more than two days remaining. On opening day, Yatharth Javery (8-16) had registered best bowling figures for Vidarbha in Cooch Behar Trophy to as Arunachal were shot out for 38 in 18.2 overs. Vidarbha will play Maharashtra in their last-eight match at MCA Cricket Stadium, Gahunje, Pune starting January 11.
Starting the day at 248-4, overnight centurion Malewar and the following batsmen did not waste time as they collected a whopping 187 runs losing two wickets in 31 overs. After Malewar was out for a well complied big hundred, Ashit, Jagjot and Soni, particularly the last two, scored at a brisk pace hammering Arunachal bowlers to all over the park. Arunachal required almost 400 runs to make Vidarbha bat again and that never looked even a distant possibility. They lost the first wicket to seamer Sanyog Shyam Bhagwat (8-2-26-2) and then left-arm spinner Ashit, who shared the new ball with Sanyog, wrecked the innings. Number four Honey Khari (45; 29b, 4x4, 3x6) played a counter-attacking innings and that was the only highlight for them. Five batsmen did not trouble the scorers while the other five could not get into double digits. Vidarbha’s left-arm tweaker Gauran Farde chipped in with a wicket.
