Striker Badal Soren’s two first half goals helped defending champions Rahul Sankryutyayan Sports Association thrash newly-promoted Manganese Ore India Limited (MOIL) XI 3-1 in Super League and stay in contention of qualifying for the final of the JSW-NDFA Elite Division League Championship on Saturday. With this win, Rahul also avenged their shock 1-2 defeat at the hands of the miners in the league round. Blesson Saji scored the other goal for Rahul after Sachin Nonhare had put MOIL ahead. Rahul SSA now have three points from two games after their 1-3 defeat at the hands of Young Muslim Football Club (YMFC) a few days back. YMFC, too, are with three points from two outings. They suffered a surprising 0-2 defeat from Ansar Club, Kamptee who top the four-team table with six points. As for MOIL XI, the team that got promoted to the Elite Division after winning the Super Division last season, it is end of their dream run in the competition. They have lost both their matches so far.
On Saturday, Rahul entered the field with intent and were determined to produce their ‘A’ game. But it was MOIL XI who took the lead against the run of play in the 17th minute when Nonhare made most of the defensive lapse to put the miners ahead. MOIL then did not give Rahul much space to score till the regulation time of the first half. It was in the injury time of the first session that Soren finally found the desired gap in MOIL defence and bulged the net in 45+3 minute to draw parity. With scores level and Rahul back in the game, the defending and three times champions, pressed from both the flanks.
The agile Soren again defeated MOIL defenders and slotted the ball home in the 61st minute to put Rahul ahead for the first time in the match. With two goals in the match, Soren took his personal tally in the competition to six goals. Six minutes later, Blesson Saji made it 3-1 to deny MOIL chance for a comeback. Abid Sheikh and Valerian Paul from Rahul and Christopher Santiago and Youraj Dudhnag from MOIL were cautioned for rough play. On Monday: Rahul vs Ansar Sporting; Tuesday: MOIL XI vs YMFC at JSW Kalmeshwar ground. Matches will start at 2.30 pm sharp.
