Trevor Gonsalves named Assam coach

Former India Under-19 pacer and ex-First-Class cricketer and coach of Vidarbha Trevor Gonsalves has been appointed as coach of Assam senior cricket team. Gonsalves’ first assignment with the Assam team will be the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament which begins from October 11 at Rajkot. Incidently, Gonsalves’ Assam will lock horns with Vidarbha in their opening encounter at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on 11th.
Gonsalves has in the past coached Vidarbha team and was instrumental in helping them win the Under-23 BCCI trophies. The former pacer, who also trained at MRF Pace Foundation under former Australia great Dennis Lillee, had also helped Vidarbha U-17 team win the Vijay Merchant Plate Group in 2007. Since then he has coached Vidarbha teams till 2020.
An experienced coach, Gonsalves was also coach of the Central Zone team in Deodhar Trophy which had players like Suresh Raina, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Praveen Kumar, to name a few.
Gonsalves was also Assistant faculty at VCA from 2014 to 2017. The former pacer also has to his credit an Under-23 trophy as a coach apart from the U-23 Col CK Nayudu title.
He was also appointed coach of Vidarbha senior men’s team in 2020 but within few months COVID struck.
Meanwhile, Assam are placed in the Elite Group A and will play their matches against Vidarbha, Mumbai, Mizoram, Railways, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. “At present I have been appointed coach of Assam for just one season,” Gonsalves told ‘The Hitavada’. “I also had an offer from Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association but by then I had committed to Assam,” added Gonsalves.
The Assam coach thanked Vidarbha Cricket Assocaition for his journey thus far. “I want to thank VCA for my successful career, as a player and as a coach. VCA has always helped me and stood by my side,” Gonsalves said.
Gonsalves also thanked his employer WCL and Dr Sanjay Kumar (Director, Personnel).
