A neurosurgeon in city hospital and his team gave a new lease of life to a young lawyer who had suffered from paralysis. The lawyer approached the doctor a bit late but a team of doctors through proper medical management saved him.
It was a regular day for 33-year old Adv Gaurav Sengar, a resident of Beltarodi Road. Early morning, Gaurav had a severe headache while studying his case to be presented in the court. As the pain increased and the vomiting started, he decided to take rest. His brother kept observing while Adv Gaurav was resting. In the evening, when a client came home and saw him, he found something abnormal in Adv Gaurav. Adv Gaurav felt it could have been pain out of migraine, which he was suffering from. By the night, one family member noticed the left side of Adv Gaurav’s body was not working properly so they took him to Promarc Hospital.
After administering basic medication for vomiting and headache, consultant sent Gaurav for MRI brain where complications and swelling in the brain were noticed.
After analyzing his MRI report and other conditions Neurosurgeon Dr Kshitij Gulhane immediately took the decision to perform craniotomy. In this process, a small hole is made in the skull or a piece of bone from the skull is removed. In Gaurav’s case part of skull was removed and kept somewhere inside the body so that the swelling will get some open space and it won’t touch the skull. Since swelled part of brain was touching the skull, it gave Guarav a headache.
Dr Gulhane told ‘The Hitavada’, “Right side brain artery was blocked and 50% part of brain stopped functioning, when Gaurav was brought to the hospital. The swelled part of brain was creating all the problems. Remaining part of the brain, too, was affected. Already patient was brought a little late and to add to the woes he had developed several complications in brain. In such conditions, it becomes difficult to save the patients and in most such cases patients succumb. So, we decided to perform craniotomy on Gaurav which was the only solution at that juncture.”
The surgery took almost four hours. Within 24 hours of the surgery, patient started regaining his consciousness and responded to verbal commands and treatment. To start normal breathing in patient, doctors did tracheostomy procedure. After some days, doctors took a decision to remove his ventilator. With a lot of positive developments taking place, hospital decided to start physiotherapy as a part of post-operative rehabilitation of Adv Gaurav, which is showing positive results. Patient's left leg and hand which were almost paralysed, showing improvement now.
Patient Gaurav is slowly coming back to his original condition. Doctor has planned the next procedure cranioplasty after 45 days. In Crainioplasty, the skull is taken out from the body where it was kept to be put at the spot of brain from where it was removed.
Dr Gulhane said, “A day after conducting craniotomy, his swelling started reducing resulting into relieving him from headache. As per our observation he has absolutely become normal and cranioplasty is just a formality which will be performed in a few days.”
