Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, on Wednesday, said, “Religion is matter of conviction and not a profession.” Khan made this remark over the rising radicalisation and religious extremism in the country during an intellectual meet jointly conducted by India Peace centre and Humanity Charitable Trust at Timber Bhavan in Lakadganj.
Khan was the chief guest and keynote speaker of the event.
“The syllabus in madarasa makes the students teach that if someone is guilty of denying god, then they have the right to take the law into their own hands and kill that man. No religion teaches to harm others and not even Islam,” said the Kerala Governor during the programme. Majid Parekh, Chairman, Humanity Charitable Trust made the introductory remarks and also presided over the function. Khan further said, “What is described as Muslim Law is not mostly based on Quraan, rather it was laid down by individuals who were gaining profits from religion.”
He said, “Never give advises to others if you are unable to follow the same.” The Governor appealed to people that any small step for the betterment of nation is patriotism and religion should not come into it.
Talking about Fatwa, he said, “Individuals should boldly say that religion is about God-consciousness, it is about promoting moral and ethical behaviour, it is not an instrument to gain political power.” Khan also said, “Refuse to accept any law that conflicts with the Quraan, however the claims made by people for whom religion has become a profession. Islam as a religion does not admit the need of any middlemen between the Creator and the creation.”
“Mother, father, educational institution and the society are the four sources from where we learn morality, ethics and responsibility. If we have good exposure of all these four sources then no one will change our mind towards extremism,” said the Kerala Governor. A large number of people attended the programme. Tejinder Singh Rawal proposed a vote of thanks.
