Leaves for Elite Asian Championships to be staged at Amman
DEFENDING Youth World champion Alfiya Pathan, who came up with a solid show on her debut in senior international event, has been included in the Indian squad that will be participating in the Elite Asian Championships to be staged at Amman, Jordan. A couple of months ago, Nagpur’s best boxer Alfiya had won a gold in the Elorda Cup that was held in Kazakhstan’s capital Nur-Sultan. She had humbled the 2016 world champion and strong contender for title Lazzat Kungeibayeva 5-0 in the women’s +81kg final. The ASBC Elite Boxing Championships in Amman is slated to be held from October 30-November 13. The official draw will take place on October 31 and the bouts will begin from November 1. Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and 5-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa will spearhead India’s campaign at the Championships. In the previous edition held in Dubai last year, Indian pugilists won 16 medals and ensured the country’s best-ever show at the event.
Alfiya was super excited and confident after having attended her first camp with seniors. “Being in the senior camp was itself a huge experience for me. Training with the top players of India was a great thing. I learned how to change the tactics and the correct ways to land punches. “I think I have been improving steadily. It was nice to have different partners for sparring. I think I am well prepared for the Asian event and will try my best to do well for the country,” said Alfiya while talking to ‘The Hitavada’.
