The programme for conduct of elections to 237 Gram Panchayats (GPs) in Nagpur district was declared on Wednesday in a press conference addressed by Dr Vipin Itankar, District Collector. Accordingly, the polling is scheduled on December 18. The Sarpanch will be elected directly this time.
The GPs for which ward-wise final voters’ list has been published on October 21, 2022, and whose present term will come to an end between October and December 2022, as well as the GPs excluded from the previous elections as they did not figure in the report of the Dedicated Commission for Reservation for Backward Class of Citizen in Local Bodies of Maharashtra, will go to polls on December 18. Also, the GPs that have been newly created will face their first election on the said date.
As far as Nagpur district is concerned, said Dr Itankar, total 237 GPs would go to polls on December 18. Polling will be conducted between 7.30 am and 5.30 pm. Counting of votes is scheduled on December 20. This time, the members and Sarpanch both will be elected directly by the voters.
As per the programme announced on Wednesday, the respective Tehsildar shall publish notification for election on November 18. The interested candidates may submit their nominations between November 28 and December 2. On December 5, the administration will conduct scrutiny of the nominations received. The interested candidates may withdraw from the fray by December 7. The final list of candidates in the fray will be published, and election symbols will be distributed on December 7.
Among 237 GPs in the district going to polls on Decembet 18, the highest 36 are in Saoner tehsil, followed by 27 each in Kamptee and Katol, 25 in Mouda, 23 in Kalmeshwar, 22 each in Narkhed and Parseoni, 19 in Nagpur (Rural), 10 in Bhiwapur, eight in Ramtek, seven each in Umred and Hingna, and four in Kuhi tehsil.
Meenal Kalaskar, Deputy District Election Officer, also was present in the press conference.
Of total 7,751 GPs going to polls on December 18 across Maharashtra, as many as 2,336 (30.14 per cent) are in Vidarbha region. The highest number of GPs among Vidarbha districts is in Bhandara (363) and Gondia (348). The district-wise number of GPs in Vidarbha going to polls is as follows: Akola -- 266, Amravati -- 257, Bhandara -- 363, Buldhana -- 279, Chandrapur -- 59, Gadchiroli -- 27, Gondia -- 348, Nagpur -- 237, Wardha -- 113, Washim -- 287, Yavatmal-- 100.
