IN the midst of ongoing exercises for Bhanupratappur by-polls, State General Secretary of National Students Union of India (NSUI) Ruhab Memon has been arrested for outraging modesty of a college student.

Police swung into action immediately after they came to know about the crime, which unfolded on Wednesday night.

The 26-year-old accused Memon, son of Yusuf Memon, a resident of Nayapara, Ward-14, under Bhanupratappur police station limits, was recently given responsibility to canvas for the party candidate ahead of ensuing by-poll, slated to take place on Dec 5.

“An offence under Section 376, 506 and 323 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused, which mounts for criminal charges of rape, criminal intimidation and voluntary causing hurt. The accused after committing the heinous assault on the victim also physically assaulted her and threatened her of facing dire consequences if she reported it to anyone,” Kanker Kotwali Station House Officer (SHO) Sharad Dubey told The Hitavada correspondent.

According to SHO Dubey, the accused preyed on his victim after getting acquainted with her on the pretext of helping her in getting admission in the college during the course of which he cleverly got the mobile number of the

unsusceptible victim. “Using his political influence, since the accused happened to be the NSUI State General Secretary, Memon managed to impress her victim and subsequently developed proximity with her. “On Wednesday, the lust-driven accused reached Kanker driving his Maruti Suzuki Ciaz sedan (CG-05 AH-2847) and called the girl to meet him at Ghadi Chowk.

Memon lured the victim into academic conversation during which he managed to convince the girl to ride with him in his car after which they reached a secluded place in the forested area of Singarbhat, where the crime was eventually committed upon the girl,” the SHO said while referring to the victim’s preliminary statement. Hereafter, a shellshocked victim somehow managed to reach back to the city during late evening hours and lodged the complaint with the Kotwali police station in Kanker. Acting upon the complaint, the police immediately swung into action and they managed to arrest Ruhab Memom on Thursday morning. Meanwhile, according to the police investigators, the medical test of the victim girl has also confirmed the crime of Memon and further investigation is in progress.
