PENNING down my heart after a long gap is giving me immense pleasure. A few months ago, I visited an elite group of like-minded people. After meeting all of them, I suddenly realised that at times, we actually kill our emotions by avoiding sharing our views with people. Many times, it happens that many subjects struck our mind but they all remain unexpressed.
We all had an exchange of thoughts and everybody who presented their views strongly insisted on the powerful word ‘Expression’! How true they are! This very word is packed with so many subtle shades of life -outlook, emotions, mindset, communication, clarity of thoughts all in one word. It implies the influence of ‘Expression’ in our lives. We cannot imagine an inexpressive society, completely dull and boring with no food for thought and no new ideas. The emphasis on this particular word ‘Expression’ drove me to express myself. Dan Poynter says: If you wait for inspiration to write You’re not a writer, You’re a waiter.
It is true, as the writer is spontaneous in his writings, so he should not wait to express himself. Nowadays, we all are engrossed in temporal stuff. While attaining these worldly pleasures, we experience tremendous mental stress. So giving utmost priority to our emotional health has become obligatory. The best remedy of overcoming this anxiety or depression is to communicate with people in the form of letters which is the manifestation of one’s own self. It is as good as practising meditation. It has been proved by many psychologists that expressing oneself through writing pacifies the mind and channels it into resourceful and constructive energy. Counsellors suggest that we should express ourselves in a diary. It certainly helps in controlling our undesirable emotions. Writing letters is also a beautiful way of connecting with people and reveal our heart in front of them. As we communicate verbally, we can also express ourselves by writing letters and strengthen our bonds with friends and family. Letter is an effective script in which words have tremendous potential to wipe all the grudges in a relationship. Written communication has incredible memories that are permanently etched in our hearts. Reading letters even after many years makes us nostalgic and revives our beautiful memories.
I still remember the good old days when I would eagerly wait for the postman and as soon as he came, I would be very glad. This habit of mine still continues. Even today, I feel the same excitement and happiness when the postman comes at my doorstep. I am sure we all have experienced the same feeling. But sadly in this tech savvy world, our postman seldom visits us. Times have changed but the connect remains the same. Today also, we love to read the old inland letters and postcards which our postman delivered in the past.
If we reflect upon the art of writing as an effective tool to overcome hesitation to communicate, it becomes very simple to direct our thoughts in the form of a write up. I came across a quote by Louis Amour:
“Start writing no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” Turning on the faucet of our thoughts can lead to an incessant downpour of optimism, creativity, faith and vision leading to an ‘Elegant Expression.’ Stay Tuned!
