Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, on Monday, said that the State Government had been giving utmost importance to Maharashtra-Karnataka border issue. Maharashtra will fight for every inch of its land, he added. With the Opposition demanding a resolution, the Maharashtra-Karnataka border row once again echoed in the ongoing Winter Session of the State Legislature on Monday.
Meanwhile, Fadnavis said, the State Government will do whatever it can to ensure the Marathi-speaking people of Karnataka get justice. The Deputy Chief Minister assured the Lower House that a resolution on the border row would be tabled in presence of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday.
On the first day of the second week of the Winter Session, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Ajit Pawar, in the Lower House, urged the Government to take action against the fast development in the disputed area on Karnataka side.
Pawar, in the House, asked, Why did the government not move a resolution on the border row when it was decided in the Business Advisory Committee that a proposal on the issue would be moved in the first week of the Winter Session?
The proposal to move the resolution also did not figure in Monday’s business list, Pawar pointed out.
The LoP said, the recent statements of Karnataka Chief Minister have hurt the pride of Maharashtra.
Notably, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution on border row with Maharashtra, resolving to protect the State’s interests and not to give an inch of land to its neighbour.
In reply, Fadnavis said, the resolution could not be introduced last week due to pandemonium created by the Opposition on suspension of senior NCP leader Jayant Patil for the rest of the session for his remark against Speaker Rahul Narvekar.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said, “Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was in Delhi to attend an official function due to which the resolution could not be tabled in the House on Monday also.” “We will do whatever we can for the justice of the Marathi-speaking population in Karnataka. The State Government will not back down even an inch on the issue,” he added. Earlier, in the Assembly, Ajit Pawar demanded revocation of Jayant Patil’s suspension whereas Deputy Chief Minister said that he would discuss the matter with the Chief Minister on his arrival on Monday afternoon.
Not satisfied with Fadnavi’s reply, the Opposition staged a walkout from the House. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, interacting with media in Delhi, said that he would move a resolution in the State Assembly on Tuesday expressing solidarity with those living in the contentious boundary region with Karnataka.
“We do not need any lessons from others. We are standing steadfast with those living in the boundary region. We are bringing a resolution to the effect in the Assembly tomorrow (Tuesday),” said Shinde.
