Play ‘Mohe Piya’ presents saga of Ghatotkuch, Bhim

On the third and last day of drama festival organised to mark the 40th anniversary of Bharat Bhavan, play ‘Mohe Piya’ was staged on Thursday evening. The entire drama revolves around the story of Mahabharat character Bhim and his son Ghatotkuch. In play, Hidimba sends her son Ghatotkuch to get a man for human sacrifice so that she can end her fast. Taking the order from mother, Ghatotkuch goes to jungle and stops a Brahmin family. The middle son of the Brahmin family expresses desire to sacrifice himself. In the meantime, Bhim comes into the picture and says that instead of Brahmin boy, he is ready for sacrifice. But he puts the challenge that first Ghatotkuch had to defeat him in the display of strength. Ghatothkuch accepts the challenge and defeats him.
 
When Bhim is taken before Hidimba, she immediately recognises him as her husband. Later on, Ghatotkuch also accepts him as his father. In the end, on the request of his father, Ghatotkuch goes into the battleground of Mahabharat and dies while doing the fight. Director of play and Padamshri recipient Vaman Kendre is a well known name in Indian Theater. He had remained as Director of Rashtriya Natya Vidhyalaya. Currently he is Director of Drama Section of Mumbai University. The play was staged under the aegis of “Rangpeeth” institution. The role of Ghatotkuch was essayed by artist Ritvik Kendre while role of Bhim was played by artist Suhash Suryavansi. It was Renuka Bodhgankar who essayed the character of Hidimba. Other artists also played the various characters of the play and left a deep imprint on the mind of audience. Appropriate light arrangement and adapt background music provided a mesmerizing effect. The original play had been penned down by Mahakavi Bhas.
