Doctor ends life by injecting overdose of anaesthetic drug

FED-UP with alleged harassment by wife and in-laws, a doctor committed suicide by injecting an overdose of anaesthetic drug in a private hospital near Agrasen Chowk on Central Avenue in Ganeshpeth area on Friday. In the wee hours, Dr Abhijeet Ratnakar Dhamankar (38) ended his life at Kimaya Multi-Speciality Hospital where he was attached for the past couple of years. Son of former Senate Member of RTM Nagpur University Dr Ratnakar Dhamankar, Dr Abhijeet was a resident of Raut Chowk, Tandapeth, Pachpaoli. Prima facie, police said, the cause of death was an overdose of atracurium.
 
A suicide note was also found in his pocket in which it was written that he was taking the extreme step due to harassment by his wife, his brother-in-law and an in-law. Preliminary investigations revealed that Dr Abhijeet had filed a divorce petition as he was not on good terms with his first wife. He then married a physiotherapist, who is attached to a private hospital at Kamptee, four-five years ago by allegedly keeping her in dark about his first marriage. The couple was blessed with a child a year ago. However, his relations with his second wife estranged after the latter came to know that her husband had extra marital affair with another woman.
 
Often, he and his second wife used to quarrel. His in-laws had lodged a complaint against him for passing casteist remarks against his wife and them at Yashodhara Nagar Police Station on February 15. Around 2 am on Friday, Dr Abhijeet himself injected an with overdose of anaesthesia at Kimaya Hospital. When other doctors came to know about it, they started treating him in the same hospital. Around 5 am, Dr Abhijeet breathed his last. Staff from Ganeshpeth Police Station arrived and sent the body for post-mortem. Police started further probe after registering a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
