In a major decision, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has cleared the proposal of faster promotions for police constables to the post of Police Sub-Inspectors (PSI). The decision will benefit around 45,000 constables and also provide an adequate number of investigation officers in the force. The Government Resolution (GR) in this regard was issued by the State Home Ministry on Friday.
The GR stated, the State has abolished the Police Naik. As a result, the Police Constable will directly be promoted to the post of Head Constables instead of Police Naik. After completing 20 years of service, these Head Constables will be promoted to the post of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and they will be promoted to the post of PSI after completion of 30 years of service. Previously, a constable was to get promotion as Police Naik after 10 years of service. After 20 years of service, he was to get promotion as Head Constable.
The constabulary staff need to serve in the force for minimum 30 years to get promotion as ASI. Due to the new decision, the constables will be able to become two-star-rank PSI within 30 years of service, said a police official. A total of 38,169 posts of Police Naik have been abolished in the State. As a result, after the restructuring, the posts of police constables will be increased to 1,08,058, posts of police constables to 51,210 and posts of ASI to 17,071. The decision will increase the number of police constables and assistant sub-inspectors in the police force, which will significantly increase the total number of investigating officers and reduce the stress on police officers, the official said. In addition, officers who have completed at least 30 years of service in the police force and three years of service as ASI as well will be given Grade Police Sub-Inspector (Grade PSI). These officers will have to undergo 12 weeks training at Maharashtra Police Academy in Nashik. This decision will enable the police constable to retire from the post with minimum three chances of promotion during his tenure.
