THE Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF), Nagpur Chapter organised a technical lecture on the topic ‘Improving Foundry Efficiency – Cast iron manufacturing and advancement riding the wave of industrial uptrends – metallurgy as the biggest strength of a foundrymen’ recently at Yashwantrao Chavan College of Engineering (YCCE), Nagpur. Dr Udaykumar Prakashchandra Waghe, Principal of YCCE was the chief guest of the programme, Dr Jayant P Giri, HOD Mechanical Department, YCCE Nagpur was the guest of honour and Kumar Kislay, Head of Elkem Research & Innovation Centre at Nagpur was the guest speaker. Binayak Das, Director Sales & Marketing, Elkem South Asia Pvt Ltd Nagpur, Dr Sharad Choudhari, Dean OBE, YCCE Nagpur, Sushil Sharma, Secretary IIF National Council and Anuja Sharma, Vice Chairperson of IIF Western Region were also present. Saurabh Mohta, Chairman IIF Nagpur Chapter emphasised on the benefits of organising such programmes which brings the foundry persons having practical experience in contact with academicians to get benefits out of it. Dr Waghe, emphasised on sending students to the foundries for practical experience in the last semester so that students can gain knowledge as well as have practical experience which will help them in their careers.
 
Binayak Das provided details about Elkam and the products it manufactures for the foundry industries. Sushil Sharma informed the participants about IIF and its role towards enhancement of foundry industries. Kumar Kislay, talked about the different castings which plays a major role in auto industries, windmills etc. He explained about the different types of cast iron - Grey Cast Iron, CG Iron and SG Iron with its metallurgy and microstructural differences. He highlighted the role of different trace elements of metallurgy of cast iron and role of inoculates on the metallurgy of cast irons. “The foundry being the mother industry we cannot think about living our life without castings. But we must control costs and produce quality castings to make foundry industry more competitive and acceptable in the market,” Kislay said. Gautam Roy, Vice Chairman IIF Nagpur Chapter was the Master of Ceremony (MOC) of the programme while Chandrashekhar Mankar, Secretary of IIF Nagpur proposed the vote of thanks.
