TRAFFIC snarls, honking, accidents are a regular affair at the Ambazari Y-point near Vivekanand Smarak (Ambazari lake overflow point). Traffic coming from Hingna, Mate Square or Krazy castle gets caught up at the ‘Y’ junction causing regular jams.
The Y-point is a weird spot, as the roads are curving at two sides, while there is a gradient towards Hingna road, and with a metro pillar right in the middle of the square it leaves the road users puzzled.
‘The Hitavada’ spoke to several residents living nearby and most of them said that accidents occur regularly at the square.
Also, it is extremely difficult for pedestrians to cross the road with traffic coming from three sides, they added. Many residents said, they have great fear crossing
the road with children during
peak hours as vehicles do not stop, and continue moving in a haphazard manner.
‘The Hitavada’ contacted Sonegaon Traffic Division PI Prashant Mane, who said, “it is possible that a signal or a pedestrian signal can be erected at the spot. A pedestrian crossing and pedestrian road marks can also be marked. The department will send a proposal for traffic signal at the spot, and write to NMC too.”
‘The Hitavada’ spoke to Ashok Mankar, Executive Engineer (Electrical, NMC) regarding the traffic situation. Mankar said that, “we are studying the point and we have sent our staff to study the junction. We’ll make a proposal and send it to the Traffic Department for their consent”.
Over the years with development of the garden at Vivekanand Smarak adjoining the Ambazari overflow point along with the signage of ‘My Love My Nagpur’, the area has become a mini tourist spot for Nagpurians. Several events are held at the spot and people flock to see the sunset at the point and therefore park their vehicles on the road, which adds to the traffic woes at the square.
Maha Metro has startd the process to restart Krazy Castle amusement park. Once it starts the traffic at the Y-point will increase manifold especially on weekends. If a signal is not installed by then the traffic situation will become nightmarish.
