THE long-awaited Fire Station for Nagpur Metro Region is finally being constructed by Nagpur Metro Region Development Authority (NMRDA) at Jamtha. The new fire station will not only provide faster relief to the residents of the Metro region but also ease the burden of the Fire Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
NMRDA Chairman Manoj Suryawanshi told ‘The Hitavada’ that the work for the new fire station was in full swing and it would be operational within a year. The Jamtha location selected by the NMRDA will also play a significant role in case of fire eventuality at the Vidarbha Cricket Association cricket stadium where international cricket matches are held regularly.
An official of NMRDA informed this newspaper that the one-storey building of the fire station would be constructed on a 12,900 square metre plot with 1837.79 square metre carpet area. Three high-tech fire tenders with two rescue vans will be available at the station, he said. Similarly, a wireless control room will also be set up there. Cabins for Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Training Room, Fire Equipment Room, Computer room, Drill tower and other facilities will also be ready, the official added.
The rescue vans can also be pressed into service in case of road accidents on the busy Nagpur-Hyderabad highway, the official further said.
The first hour of fire emergencies, often called as the ‘golden hour’, is the most critical for saving lives and property, he said. The NMC’s firefighters were finding it difficult to respond in time to the fire situation occurring in the Metro region resulting in massive property losses. With the new fire station, the NMRDA would tackle the fire situation promptly providing much-needed relief to the residents.
When contacted, an official of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) said that the Metro region area was developing fast with boom in construction activities. As there is no space in NMC’s jurisdiction, the new big-size construction projects are going to the Metro region. A sizeable number of high-rise buildings are being constructed in the region along with logistic parks, schools and colleges. As the NMRDA is the sanctioning authority, it is necessary for the organisation to provide fire safety services to the residents, he opined.
The NMC official also maintained that the new fire station coming up in NMRDA region would reduce a considerable work load on the city fire tender services.
